Road trip

Day 1

I didn’t take pictures, the land was flat and dry. 5 hours of nothing but cattle , sheep and goats. Oh and two ostriches.

At least there was a Steers in Ventersdorp for coffee and a toasted sandwich for breakfast.

I have also learned that Vryburg is the “Texas of South Africa”

In any case, overnight stop, Kuruman.

What a disappointment. Centre town , is a dump. Locals warn not to go to the tourist attractions without security escort.

Finding dinner was also a challenge. Had a few beers at Rostili watching the Eng v Fij game. It didn’t invite to stay and eat dinner. Eventually had a very basic burger dinner at one of the “country lodges”

I wished I rather spend another hour on the road and stayed in Kathu.

Day 2

Dry and dusty surrounds. The road stretching like an endless black line to nowhere.

Stopped at Augrabies. Place of great noise.

Glad I’ve arranged for meat to braai and the honesty bar came to the rescue. I drank cider…still not my favourite.

PS: bottle stores are closed in the Northern Cape on Sundays.

The quick hike to the falls and a walk around moon rock.

The falls is a must see, can only imagine what it must look like after the rainy season.

Well, moon rock, is another story, do wear insect repellent… the view from there is awesome.

Day 3

Another long snaky road. Stopped in Aggeneys… world of iron ore.

Then stopped in Soringbok, stocked up with alcohol and pies.

Halfway through the mountain, the road turned gravel. Passing through zama-zama diamond mining fields, a good 150km on dirt road. Then the most amazing view, Klein Zea.

Once again, no dinner, even from the the Crazy Crayfish bar, on the same premises. You had to order dinner before 12pm.

Had a few drinks with the owner and some locals. Amazing stories were told.

Our anniversary was celebrated with leftover pies and L’ormarins Brut. Sea in our ears…
